Plot
The picture opens with screen titles depicting the against Catholic procurements of the 1917 Constitution of Mexico. Civil war ejects when recently chose Mexican president, Plutarco Elías Calles (Rubén Blades), starts a savage and tenacious crackdown against the nation's Catholic reliable. The picture portrays the gore by indicating holy place being determined to blaze, nuns subjected to compelling provocation, Catholic ministers killed with the opportunity to leave Mexico and endless dedicated laborers murdered and then openly clung telegraph shafts.
The story movements to Father Christopher (Peter O'Toole), a Catholic minister, who is mercilessly killed by the Federales (government powers). The executing is seen by a thirteen-year-old kid named José Luis Sanchez (Mauricio Kuri). Determined by anger and lash out, José joins the dissidents, or Cristeros ("officers for Christ"), battling against Calles. Their rallying call is "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" (significance "Long live Christ the King"). The revolutionary guide, turned all in all Enrique Gorostieta (Andy Garcia), a freethinker, takes an investment in adolescent José and the kid soon ends up being his protégé. Later while battling against the Federales, José is caught in a firefight and is tortured to compel him to revoke his faith in God. At the time he unfalteringly guards his confidence, he is executed. The following year Gorostieta is murdered in a fight at Jalisco.
