With "Resurrect Dead," the chief Jon Foy takes after three courageous "criminologists" on the trail of the inventor of the Toynbee tiles: tiles embellished with astounding wires (scribbled in a style reviewing the Rev. Howard Finster's) and embedded in pavement on boulevards from Buenos Aires to Kansas City, Kan.
The tiles —an illustration could be discovered at West Broadway and Avenue of the Americas in SoHo —imply the student of history Arnold J. Toynbee and his speculations of atomic recovery as a method of carrying the dead, said in the Stanley Kubrick picture "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Following the tiler's character and opening his usual way of doing things takes Colin Smith, Steve Weinik and Justin Duerr to a Jupiter-colonization bunch, a David Mamet play and a shortwave radio gathering. As they hit advances and stumbling pieces, Mr. Foy's ill humored score and capable altering emphasize the riddle. In spite of the fact that their quarry finally seems, by all accounts, to be a model of suspicion and preference, its the thrill of the chase that keeps "Resurrect Dead" forcing.
